modem for Indigo 2

Hi all,

could someone be so kind to tell what good modems are for I2 Solid
Impact R4400 ? I need a brand name and model #.

Thanks.

Any reputable external modem should be fine. Note that the I2 is limited
to 38400 for its serial ports: if you need to go faster than that,
you should look into getting an external serial port such as from
    Digi (Central Data).

    Use the USR 56k Sportster.
You must have a special SGI cable (read the man page "serial" to get the
    proper info.)
Make sure the Sportster is upgraded to the newest firmware.
The SGI publication "Pipeline" Nov/Dec 1995 edition tells you how to do
    all these things.
You can get it at SGI’s web site under Sportfolio.
All in all it’s pretty easy.

    GOOD LUCK!

            Cheers, Robb

It is a waste to use a 56K modem on an Indigo^2, as the maximum
serial port speed on the Indigo^2 is 38400. If you can find a cheaper
28.8 modem, you might as well use that: anything faster and the Indigo^2
will not be able to keep up with uncompressed data from the modem.

If you need a fast modem connection, you might want to get one of
Digi’s line of Central Data external serial ports (SCSI or Ethernet based),
as those can handle speeds of at least 112K bps.
