I have just picked up a junked 4D/35 system with no manuals.
I turned the system on and the screen displays the boot sequence ok.
But as soon as the OS is loaded, the screen has a bunch of black
vertical bars. Is this due to a configuration problem or is the
graphics circuit broken?
Thank you.
PS: if I can get the screen to work, how can I obtain root access?

One of the raster managers is loose or broken. Open the system
and reseat all the accessible chips on the graphics board.
