Using the QIC150 drive on a 4D/440

I feel like an idiot for posting this ; but maybe someone can help me out.
Sorry – I’m used to dealing with DAT and 8mm media ; so QIC stuff is new to
me.

At work we have a 4D/440 with the Archive Viper QIC150 drive. At home I have
a Tandberg 3660. Both drives handle a variety of tape densities/lengths.
I am trying to use QIC120 tapes (120 MB capacity) to xfer files between my
work machine and a SPARCstation at home.

When I mount the tape in either machine’s drive ; mt status tells me it
recognizes it as QIC120 media. On the SGI – I’ve been using tar to move
stuff to tape.

The problem is this… I can put at most 20-30 MB on the tape before tar
will ask me to insert ANOTHER blank tape to continue.  I cannot put a
single 60MB .tar.Z file onto the tape without it wanting multiple tapes.
If the tape is 120MB capacity – why cant it even fit 60? Or as far as I
can tell 30 MB ??

I’ve tried using a blocking factor of 400 instead of the default of 20 – and
the same situation occurs: it wants to be fed more cartridges.

On the SGI, the device I use is /dev/rmt/tps0d7

Any suggestions – any explanations ?

Wacom tablet driver needed

Our graphics lab has a Wacom digitizing tablet.  If you know how one could
obtain a driver for SGI VGX/4D, Crimson, Personal Iris, or Indigos,
or know of the address of the company, please contact me at

Seagate Drive Repair

We have a Personal Iris which has a Seagate hard drive, it’s platter won’t spin up. I was wondering if someone out there knows where I can sent it for repair. A phone number or mailing address of a reputable company would be much appreciated.

power surge protection

Hi,

I need to know what kind of power surge protection
is recommended for an entry indigo.  A vendor
phone number will be very helpful.

Thanks,

Tape interchange

Lets take a trip in the wayback machine.  I have just gotten some old SGI
equipment.  It has a tape drive that is supposedly a QIC 24 tape drive.  I
also have an old Sun shoebox with a QIC24 tape drive.  This is all I have
in the way of QIC drives which is not all that suprising given that all
the equipment I have is someone elses castoff.

The problem is that I can read a tape on the SGI that was created on the
Sun but not vice-versa.  I have tried using byte swapping on reads on the
Sun but I get IO errors wether I use "dd" or "tar".  I’ve read over the
man pages on both machines, but I remain in the dark.

Seperate sync levels on Reality Engine

Can someone please tell me what the electrical characteristics of the
seperate sync signals available from the Reality Engine  and Reality
Engine/2 grahics systems are? Also are seperate sync signals available
from the MultiChannel option and if so are these at the same levels as
the primary signals?

Thanks in advance

Stereo on Crimson Elan running 4.0.5

Does anyone ever tried to use stereo shutter glasses on a Crimson Elan?

The manual talks about the connector located on port2 of the I/O board,
but we can’t get a synchro signal out of it. The station is stereo wired
from the main board to the I/O panel, but we just get nothing (tried to
get it on oscilloscope…).

Does anyone knows of some special patches to put in the system, special
hardware requirements (shouldn’t, as it was sold as "stero-ready") or any
special command(s)?

During our tests, we tried the /usr/gfx/setmon STEREO and STR_RECT, which
made the monitor toggle, but didn’t generate any synchro out of the damn
port… (We also used the code from /usr/people/4DGifts/examples/devices/
Stereoview…)

Finally, does anyone know of anybody who succeeded in this quest?

Thanks for any pointer.

Laurent.
