I feel like an idiot for posting this ; but maybe someone can help me out.
Sorry – I’m used to dealing with DAT and 8mm media ; so QIC stuff is new to
me.
At work we have a 4D/440 with the Archive Viper QIC150 drive. At home I have
a Tandberg 3660. Both drives handle a variety of tape densities/lengths.
I am trying to use QIC120 tapes (120 MB capacity) to xfer files between my
work machine and a SPARCstation at home.
When I mount the tape in either machine’s drive ; mt status tells me it
recognizes it as QIC120 media. On the SGI – I’ve been using tar to move
stuff to tape.
The problem is this… I can put at most 20-30 MB on the tape before tar
will ask me to insert ANOTHER blank tape to continue. I cannot put a
single 60MB .tar.Z file onto the tape without it wanting multiple tapes.
If the tape is 120MB capacity – why cant it even fit 60? Or as far as I
can tell 30 MB ??
I’ve tried using a blocking factor of 400 instead of the default of 20 – and
the same situation occurs: it wants to be fed more cartridges.
On the SGI, the device I use is /dev/rmt/tps0d7
Any suggestions – any explanations ?
