I have a R3000 Indigo which is about 18 months old and
stopped running a week ago. The symptoms were simple; it
simply turned off and would not come back on. We diagnosed
the problem by phone with SGI techs as a power supply
problem and replaced that. Although the system would now
turn on, the system disk was unrecognizable and did not seem
to be spinning. That is currently in the shop for repair.
While awaiting its return, I have been trying to imagine
scenarios which would have caused this failure and need some
help.
1. There could be some sort of board or backplane problem.
However, I am able to get a sash window using the CDROM.
2. The power supply may have taken out the disk when it
failed.
3. The disk failed and took the power supply.
4. The new power supply is providing a faulty voltage which
destroyed the disk when it first tried to boot.
It is this last scenario which I am most concerned about at
the moment. I would prefer not to insert my repaired drive,
only to have it taken out again!
Question to some of you tech people: Is there a way I can
insert a voltmeter someplace to check out voltages to the
drive? Where and what should I read? This question is
precipitated by Olsen’s comment a couple of days ago
relating a disk failure to faulty voltages.
